Amazon Polly

✓ Docs-verified · Sep 3, 2026◌ Not audio-tested△ What we could not verify

Published September 3, 2026 · This page indexes everything this site has verified about Amazon Polly and links to where each finding is set out in full. It is not a review — the review is. No listening test has been run, so nothing here says how Amazon Polly sounds.

Amazon Polly is AWS’s pay-as-you-go text-to-speech service, framed by this site as infrastructure rather than a product: four engines selected by a single API parameter, with no editor, no self-serve voice cloning and no subscription.

The finding that matters most: Amazon Polly pairs the joint-lowest documented list price in the site’s coverage ($4.00 per 1 million characters) with output ownership stated in a numbered contract clause — Service Terms 50.2, "The output that you generate using AI Services is Your Content" — but Service Terms 50.3 makes your submitted text usable for improving AWS models by default on free and paid tiers alike, with an opt-out only an AWS Organizations administrator can set, and AWS’s product page, FAQ and Service Terms give three conflicting accounts of that data handling.

Everything below is drawn from pages on this site, each of which carries its own sources and check dates (how we verify).

What it costs

Billing is per character with no subscription, no seats, no minimum and no volume discount published on the pricing page: Standard $4.00, Neural $16.00, Generative $30 and Long-Form $100.00 per 1 million characters, all read from AWS’s pricing page on September 1, 2026. A separate "AWS GovCloud (US) Pricing Details" section on the same page lists Standard at $4.80 and Neural TTS at $19.20 with no Long-Form or Generative price at all, so quoting the four commercial rates to a government buyer understates their cost by 20%. The free tier is 5 million Standard characters a month, plus 1 million Neural, 500,000 Long-Form and 100,000 Generative each qualified "for the first 12 months"; caching and replay carry no additional charge by AWS’s own statement; and on pricing comparison (rates read September 1, 2026) Polly’s $4.00 Standard rate is joint-lowest among the ten providers tracked, tied with Google Cloud Standard, while its own Long-Form engine at $100.00 is twenty-five times that.

Every rate above is set against every other provider’s, normalized to one unit, in our pricing comparison.

Where Amazon Polly’s own material disagrees with itself

These are contradictions inside the vendor’s published documentation, not disagreements between us and the vendor. We report both readings rather than choosing one, and each links to the page where we set it out in full. We have published 12 in total; the 10 with the most bearing on a decision are below, and the rest sit in the pages linked underneath.

Dated and time-sensitive

Facts with a clock on them — model sunsets, policy revisions, market status. These are the entries most likely to be out of date first, which is why they carry their dates.
