OpenAI vs Speechify 2026
Published September 2, 2026 · This is a documentation-based comparison. Every figure below was read from the two vendors’ own sources on September 1, 2026 and carries that check date. No listening test has been run, so nothing here compares how the two providers sound.
The short answer
Speechify is cheaper to start and OpenAI is safer to sign. Speechify’s API begins at a free tier with a genuine hard cap and a $10-a-month paid plan including a million characters and voice cloning. OpenAI has no free tier for speech at all, and its older models list at $15 per million characters (Speechify API pricing, OpenAI pricing, both checked September 1, 2026).
The contracts are not close. OpenAI assigns output rights expressly and excludes API content from training in a numbered clause. Speechify has no clause assigning ownership of generated audio at all, and its governing terms exclude everything except Voice Over Studio from commercial use — while its API pricing card advertises “Commercial use”.
Both impose a disclosure duty, and both have a paperwork problem with it. OpenAI’s guide asserts one and attributes it to a policy that no longer appears to contain it. Speechify’s sits in terms that are over two years old against a product that has changed brand and domain since.

Price and the free-tier gap
The starkest difference is at zero. Speechify’s API free tier gives 50,000 characters a month and 60 agent minutes, described as “a hard cap: when you reach your monthly text-to-speech characters or voice-agent minutes, usage pauses until your next billing cycle… there’s no auto top-up”. OpenAI publishes no free speech tier at all — the only provider among the ten we cover with none.
Paid, Speechify is cheaper per character and easier to read. Starter at $10 a month includes a million characters, then $10 per additional million; Pro at $99 drops the overage to $8; Scale at $499 drops it to $6. Note the arithmetic trap: at the included allowance, Pro works out to $33 per million and Scale to $49.90, so upgrading “for the better rate” without projecting volume costs more per character, not less.
OpenAI cannot be compared on a single axis at all. Its older tts-1 is $15.00 per million characters and tts-1-hd is $30.00, while its current gpt-4o-mini-tts bills audio output at $12.00 per million tokens. OpenAI publishes no token-to-character conversion for audio output, so you cannot answer the obvious question — is the new model cheaper than the old one? — from published information, let alone compare it to Speechify.
Ownership, training and commercial use
This section is where the two genuinely part company, and it runs the opposite way to price.
OpenAI’s services agreement contains the strongest ownership language in our comparison set. Clause 4.1: “As between Customer and OpenAI, to the extent permitted by applicable law, Customer: (a) retains all ownership rights in Input; and (b) owns all Output. OpenAI hereby assigns to Customer all OpenAI’s right, title, and interest, if any, in and to Output.” An express assignment is stronger than the disclaimers most vendors offer. Clause 4.2 adds the training exclusion: OpenAI “will not use Customer Content to develop or improve the Services, unless Customer explicitly agrees to such use.” Those clauses were verified August 11, 2026 — OpenAI’s policy pages returned an access error when we tried to re-read them on September 1, so they carry their original date rather than a fresh one.
Speechify has no ownership clause. Its API terms clause 1.1 classifies output as “Customer Content” but defers that definition to “Business Terms” at its main terms page, where the phrase does not appear at all. The only ownership statement it publishes is undated marketing copy on a pricing-page FAQ.
And its commercial-use position is contested by its own documents. Terms clause 4.4 states: “The Services, with the exception of Speechify Voice Over Studio, are not intended for your commercial use.” Its API pricing card, meanwhile, lists “Commercial use” as a free-plan feature. A pricing-card bullet is not a licence clause, and the Terms of Service govern in a dispute. If your deployment depends on those two words, get written confirmation.
Cloning and control
Speechify wins cloning outright. It is included on the $10-a-month Starter plan, and its consent implementation is the strictest we have documented: “Consent is verified, not asserted. You never send a checkbox or a signed form: the speaker reads a phrase Speechify issues, and the recording of them doing so is checked and retained as the consent record for the voice.” And there is no way around it: “Batch or unattended creation. There is no consent path without a speaker present.”
OpenAI has custom voices too — the common belief that it offers preset voices only is out of date — but they are “limited to eligible customers” via sales, and their licensing sits in a Text-to-Speech Supplemental Agreement that OpenAI references in plain text without a hyperlink and does not list among its published policies. You cannot read the terms before contacting sales.
Control is OpenAI’s compensation. Its instructions parameter takes plain-language direction over delivery rather than markup — distinctive, and well suited to a human iterating on a read by hand. The costs are real: no SSML support anywhere in the speech API, and a hard 4,096-character cap per request that forces client-side chunking. Speechify supports SSML, though its own pages describe SSML billing two opposite ways — its pricing FAQ says tags are not counted, its API limits documentation says character counts include them.
Two disclosure duties with paperwork problems
Both vendors expect you to tell listeners the voice is synthetic, and neither duty is cleanly sourced.
OpenAI asserts one in its guide and attributes it to a document that no longer seems to contain it. The text-to-speech guide states: “Our usage policies require you to provide a clear disclosure to end users that the TTS voice they are hearing is AI-generated and not a human voice.” We went to the usage policies to read the requirement in its own words and did not find it there. Treat the duty as real — it is stated in current official documentation and costs little to honour — but if you need to cite the binding source in a compliance document, you will have to ask OpenAI where it now lives.
Speechify’s sits in documents that are dated. Its consumer Terms carry “Updated July 1, 2025” and its AI Voice API Terms “Updated June 10, 2024” — the API contract is over two years old against a product that has changed brand and domain since, with the developer platform now at a different address entirely and the docs carrying a canonical header warning that the consumer site is a separate product.
One further dated item on Speechify’s side: two model identifiers carry a published retirement scheduled for November 21, 2026, and the surviving streaming multilingual model documents seven locales against a marketing figure of 30+ languages. OpenAI’s equivalent is a deprecation notice dated July 20, 2026 covering legacy audio families, and a tts-1 lineage described three different ways across three official pages.
Voice quality, pronunciation and naturalness
We have not compared how these two providers sound, and we will not imply otherwise.
Our standardized listening benchmark is designed but not running. Until it does, this page carries no naturalness verdict, no pronunciation comparison and no scores for either provider. Both vendors publish quality claims of their own; those belong to them, and we do not repeat them as findings.
Choose OpenAI if · Choose Speechify if
Choose OpenAI if:
- Your legal review needs an express assignment of output rights. Speechify’s contract never mentions ownership.
- Your compliance position depends on content not training a model. OpenAI excludes it contractually and names the speech endpoint.
- You want to direct delivery in prose rather than markup, and can live without SSML.
- You are already building on OpenAI — one key, one bill, one SDK.
Choose Speechify if:
- You need to start free. A genuine hard-capped tier against no free access at all.
- You need cloning at a realistic price, with consent the platform actually enforces.
- You need a price you can forecast per character. OpenAI’s current model bills in tokens with no published conversion.
- You need SSML or long single requests. OpenAI supports neither.

What we could not verify
Honesty about gaps beats a page that looks complete. Genuinely unresolved as of September 1, 2026:
- How either provider sounds. No listening test has been run.
- OpenAI’s contract clauses could not be re-read on September 1. Its policy pages returned an access error; the clauses carry their August 11, 2026 verification date.
- What OpenAI’s Text-to-Speech Supplemental Agreement says. Referenced without a link and not among the published policies.
- Where OpenAI’s AI-disclosure requirement now lives. The guide attributes it to the usage policies; we did not find it there.
- Any token-to-character conversion for OpenAI audio output. None is published, so no per-character comparison is possible against its current model.
- Who owns Speechify’s generated audio. No numbered clause assigns it, and the API terms defer to definitions that are not published.
- Whether Speechify bills SSML tags. Its pricing FAQ and its API limits documentation state opposite things.
- Whether Speechify’s announced model retirement has taken effect. Reported as scheduled, not effective.
